Nihilistic City Nights

RBC-B2-2-209x300 Robert Yates

South London Books Presents Nihilistic City Nights Robert Yates.  “The poetry of Robert Yates is both brooding and exacting; something about it unnerves us, it sees too clearly into things: the dystopian vacuity of modern life, our shared language doomed to a series of dull clucks and futile gestures. Don’t come to these poems for consolation, but for the exhilaration of seeing all with absolute clarity. Uncompromising and strangely haunting stuff.” Fran Lock Nihilistic City Nights. Tiny-Collisions-optomize-1-206x300 Poppy Dillon

Tiny-Collisions

Poppy Dillon First loves and anxiety to hangovers and periods, Poppy Dillon’s heartfelt yet humorous debut poetry collection documents the awkward experiences of her early 20s.  The collection is full of stories about growing up, and how chance encounters and relationships can shape you. From the momentous ones, like falling in and out of love, making and losing friends, to the seemingly insignificant, like that person you sat next to on a megabus for nine hours. Poppy is now 27 and a full-time copywriter and spoken word poet in London.

Keith Bray

Keith Bray  SKY DOWN TO GROUND

Skyhigh-Down-to-Ground-1-188x300 Keith Bray

London poetry books

Keith Bray SKY DOWN TO GROUND my fourth book of poems ‘Skyhigh down to ground’ begins and engages with the political much more directly than my previous poetry collections. Intuitive responses more questioning than providing any actual solutions or answers. The content slowly moves towards the domestic, the social and more personal as the book progresses.
The book is dedicated to Cam Ringel, Poet Razz, Jazzman John Clarke and Maggie Swampwino. Four people who had and still have a profound influence on my creative work. Not their actual words/music as such but the way they lived their lives and stayed true to their inner voice. Due for release soon our book can be found on South London Books

Aldo Quagliotti

                                     Japanese Tosa

Japanese-Tosa-1-225x300 Aldo QuagliottiJapanese Tosa is the first poetic collection by Aldo Quagliotti, a journey summing up ten years of ink experiments that accompany, like rock engravings, the evolution of the narrative style of a child in love with poetry in his nightly writing sessions, now a married man. An uncertain path, which begins in its heart of hearts: the eye of the reader, who will be able to find a personal glimmer of revenge, of hitting back, of desire for a challenge, between the folds of reasoning and emotional eclipses. A deep and lacerating desire for universal empathy that can fall from the sky like an angry downpour. Because if poetry has a claim, it is to pierce the chilling wall of indifference and to catch the heart unprepared when it needs to give it the brightest of embraces. He will then be able to bark out his ferocious desire to live, despite any wavering. Like that Japanese Tosa, a dog breed that nobody wants to take charge of, which continues to howl about its desire to wander around, in a world dominated by interpersonal immobility. you can find our books on South London Books

Pauline Deakin

London Poetry Books

Dreams, Screams and Washing Machines

Pauline Deakin first collection with London Poetry Books. “Dreams, Screams and Washing Machines is a delight. Pauline Deakin has a particular gift for unraveling the poetic from the prosaic; dusting off the treasures and insights which hide in plain sight of the domestic and the commonplace.” Mark Coleman
Dreams, Screams and Washing Machines is the poetry book for people who don’t think poetry is for them. Funny, moving and deeply real, it unravels the dreams (and nightmares) of ordinary life. You may never look at a washing machine in the same way again. Pauline Deakin  books on South London Books

Keith Robert Bray

                                         Art Squares Look & Stare

Art-Squares-Look-Stare-200x300 Keith Robert Bray

London Poetry Books

My third book of poems is a broad selection of themes and ideas written over the last two years. Some drawn from personal experience and direct observation while others more playful, fanciful, surreal; reflecting individual concerns more sociological than political. A mixed bag of assorted vignettes and anecdotes brought together under the collective title ‘Art squares look and stare’. A large majority of the poems are written and presented in traditional stanza form. A conscious decision made in order to tighten up the work to make the pieces concise, pithier and structurally more coherent. George E Harris

AND THEN IT COMES BLOWING poetic expression of George E Harris

crop-tomizeGH-A2-FINAL-216x300 George E Harris‘And Then It Comes Blowing’ is a collection of works at the beginning of an exploration for George E Harris. The works can be read aloud as well as sung. At times they have been cut up, spliced and performed as a longer work. Some works are new and yet to be projected through a live setting. The early morning rises to engage in a working day prompted George to write and photograph, using the time of the journeys taken across the city of London. The writing began in forms of notes and phrases from observations and then after thoughts prompted by the photographs. The book covers a period in Georges writing since 2011 to the present day. ‘Steam Detective’ and ‘Odes To a 1940s Film Set’ are the earliest works with ‘Paradise Walk’, ‘City Am I’, ‘Vs in the Window’ and the title work being more recent pieces. Some works have been added to over a period of recent years because of a need to reflect current events like the work ‘No Poor Doors’, which was initially put together in 2015. George’s works take on an abstract, but social political consciousness of the present. They also use memories of the personal, places and people whilst delving into a constant interest of the cinematic past and present. Each blending and overlapping as life often does. The title ‘And Then It Comes Blowing’ comes from the expressions of waiting, listening, struggles, political and social cares with references to natural occurrences in changing weather systems.  It is a blast of furious thoughts that come out in abstracted realism, split in the in-between moments of observing, memory, news and the written notes.
